Princess Diana's brother said the media's treatment of Prince Harry and Meghan "echoes" what his sister endured.
In an interview with the BBC, Earl Spencer said "it would really be beholden on people to learn from Diana's example", describing the scrutiny faced by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as a "cancerous influence" that can be "really, really unpleasant".
He said he saw Diana's "tears of despair" over media coverage and said she was "really brought low by all that criticism". Spencer added it was a "pity" to see "echoes of that now" in the treatment of his nephew Harry and his wife Meghan.
"I'm not here to speak for Harry and Meghan, but for anyone who's being destroyed in this way daily, it must be such a cancerous influence in their life."
Spencer is believed to be close to Harry and Meghan, who have a strained relationship with his family.
In a memoir due to be released this week, Spencer made a series of allegations about the royal family.
He accused King Charles of saying "we'll forget her soon enough" during an argument following the death of Princess Diana in 1997.
Buckingham Palace released a statement in response, which said the King was "mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgement and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss".
The Earl then doubled down on the claim, stating the infrequency of calls between him and the King made it easier to remember what had been said.
The upcoming book, called Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, also included an excerpt claiming how excited King Charles sounded after Diana's fatal car crash.
"Unlike my other callers, who were stunned, barely able to articulate their condolences and offers of help, he sounded giddily elated - like a lottery winner, I remember thinking at the time," he said.
Next year marks the 30 year anniversary of the Paris car crash that killed the Princess.
