Police are searching for a potentially lethal medication in a handbag that was stolen from a car in Auckland.
The medication — known as Pentobarbital — was the drug most commonly used to euthanise, and could have a lethal effect if ingested by humans or animals.
Auckland City CIB Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Greaves said the medication provided by a vet was inside a handbag which was stolen from a vehicle parked on Athlone Rd, Glendowie on Wednesday, September 16.
"The medication is in liquid form and was inside a pink handbag," he said.
"It's likely the person has mistakenly taken the medication without knowing it was inside the bag, and we are asking for it to be handed in as soon as possible."
Greaves said police were treating the matter as a priority, and inquiries had so far been unsuccessful.
"Our main concern is that the person who took this item, or potentially gives it to someone else, does not know what they are in possession of.
Police urged anyone in possession of the bagged item to return it immediately, given the risk.
