Work to rebuild New World Victoria Park – heavily damaged in a fire last year – is due to start soon, with the new store set to open late next year.
A huge blaze gutted the central Auckland supermarket in June 2025. Extensive damage meant the building was unable to be salvaged and was subsequently demolished.
Today, New World owner Foodstuffs confirmed that resource consent for the store's rebuild had been approved, and construction was set to begin. The new supermarket was expected to reopen in December 2027.
New World Victoria Park owner-operator Steve Purton called it a "significant moment".
"There’s been a huge amount of work behind the scenes over the past year to get to this point, and we’re incredibly grateful for the support and patience of our customers, neighbours and the wider Victoria Park community," he said.
“As a local owner, I’m incredibly proud to be investing in the future of this store and the community we’ve been part of for so long.
"We know how much Victoria Park means to our customers, and we’re looking forward to bringing the store back and creating a modern supermarket that will serve local families and businesses for decades to come."
The new design would largely keep the original building's footprint.
Foodstuffs has promised the new supermarket will have a modern design, improved customer flow and accessibility, more efficient back-of-house operations, a more sustainable building, and a better shopping experience.
