A magnitude 4.0 earthquake has jolted the central North Island this afternoon.
GeoNet said the earthquake struck at 4.25pm at a depth of 5km around 10km south of the town.
Hundreds of people reported feeling the quake shortly after it struck, with more than 600 felt reports.
"That was a cracker earthquake," one social media user said. "Short but sharp."
The earthquake occurred around the same area as July's magnitude 5.9 quake — the largest ever recorded in the area.
