Helicopters and fire crews have been called to an "aggressive" scrub fire on the northern fringe of Taupō.
An eyewitness told 1News the blaze started as a small brush fire in a paddock before westerly winds took hold.
"Now it's an aggressive fire, smoke so intense and covered the Taupō arterial expressway."
The witness said traffic was being diverted.

"On arrival they found, a fire that was 150m in length, threatening a building in Tauhara," a spokesperson said.
"Six fire trucks, two water tanks, and two helicopters are working to cut off the spread and extinguish the fire."
Police urged the public to keep away from Broadlands Rd in Tauhara as services worked to contain the fire.
"Conditions are very windy and dry, with emergency services actively working at the scene to bring the fire under control.
"Please delay travel or to stay clear of Broadlands Rd to East Taupo Arterial / State Highway 1.
Broadlands Rd to Miro St was closed to facilitate safe points for emergency services to work from and traffic management was in place.
Police continue to urge the public and motorists to avoid the area.
The wind was currently at 15 knots, or just under 30km/h, Fire and Emergency added.
