A Coromandel man who tried to import a "child-like sex doll" has been jailed for two and a half years.
The 49-year-old was also sentenced for possessing child sexual abuse material and exploiting another person by secretly filming a sexual encounter.
Customs first intercepted the sex doll falsely declared as a "mannequin model" in January 2025.
Acting Chief Customs Officer, child exploitation and operations team, Shaun Martin said these kinds of items were "often linked to other forms of child exploitation offending".
During a raid of the man's home, child sex abuse material was found on his devices. Martin said "computer-generated" content was found.
"Whether AI-generated or created by other means, material of this nature contributes to the exploitation and sexualisation of children," Martin said.
Martin said the man also started exploiting another person by secretly filming a sexual encounter.
"We are pleased we were able to intervene before further harm occurred.”
He was charged with importation of an indecent or obscene article (child-like sex doll), possession of child sexual abuse material, and intentionally or recklessly making an intimate visual recording.
At the Waihi District Court on Monday, the man was jailed for two and a half years. He was also registered as a child sex offender.
