Alleged burglar seriously injured in confrontation with occupants

An alleged armed burglar is in hospital after entering a property in Mangawhai – where he was disarmed by the house's occupants.

Just before 2pm, police were called to an address on Robert St after an unknown man entered a property armed with a piece of wood and confronted the residents, Acting Detective Inspector Megan Goldie said.

"This male has advanced on the occupants, and a confrontation has occurred where the occupants have disarmed the male."

Police and ambulance staff were alerted as medical assistance was provided to the unknown man by the occupants.

Goldie said a 26-year-old man was taken to Whangārei Hospital.

"He is in a serious condition, but those injuries are currently not thought to be life-threatening," he said.

"An investigation is now underway to establish exactly what has occurred this afternoon, but I can reassure the community that police are not seeking anyone else in relation to this incident."

A scene guard had been set up at the Robert St address, with a scene examination to take place at a later stage.

A heightened police presence in the Mangawhai community was to be expected in response to the events.

No charged had been confirmed at this stage.
