A person was taken to hospital after a crash involving a pedestrian and a car in Hokitika on the West Coast this morning.

Police said emergency services were called to the incident just before 9am.

"One person has sustained serious injuries and is being transported to hospital," police said.

Fitzherbert and Park streets were closed.

"Police ask motorists to avoid the area."
