MetService has forecast heavy rain for parts of Northland, Auckland and Great Barrier Island today.
A heavy rain watch is in place for the areas for 15 hours from 10am today to 1am Thursday, which include northern and eastern parts of Northland, Auckland north of Ōrewa and Great Barrier Island.
MetService meteorologist Alanna Burrows said while the rain amounts are not expected to reach warning criteria, heavy downpours are possible.
"If you're driving visibility could reduce, and maybe some localised surface flooding on the roads as you're going along. If you're out and about travelling, that might interrupt transport a little bit as you're out on the road."
The rain is expected to ease from the north this afternoon and evening.
Meanwhile a heavy rain watch is also in place on the South Island's Westland District from 2pm today to 6am tomorrow.
MetService said this will bring periods of heavy rain, with amounts which may approach warning criteria, especially about the ranges.
This has a moderate chance of upgrading to a warning, it added.
Burrows said a northerly flow is also expected to bring "warmer than average" temperatures to parts of the South Island tomorrow.
"[In] Christchurch, we've got a high of 19C tomorrow. Which is over 6C above average for this time of year... Wanaka we've got a high of 15C, which is over 4C above average. So, some warmer daytime temperatures expected."
