Two people have been arrested after a fleeing driver crashed into two vehicles, including a police car, and later a fence while allegedly attempting to evade officers during a two-and-a-half hour long incident in the central North Island yesterday.
Police spotted a vehicle of interest near Marton at around 4.30pm and signalled for it to stop.
Inspector Ash Gurney said the driver failed to do so, with officers deciding not to pursue the vehicle due to the way it was being driven.
The vehicle was seen again heading west towards Whanganui on State Highway 3 just before 5pm, he added.
"Officers set up road spikes however the vehicle avoided them and continued to flee."
As the vehicle left Whanganui, the vehicle turned around near the intersection with Heads Rd and collided with a police vehicle at low speed.
Gurney said no injuries were reported "however the police vehicle was damaged and is not driveable".
The vehicle was seen again travelling south through Bulls at around 6pm where spike attempts were again unsuccessful.
Twenty minutes later, the vehicle was involved in a crash near Levin and continued driving. No injuries were reported.
Police received a call at around 7pm reporting the vehicle had crashed into a fence at Rangiotu, southwest of Palmerston North.
"Officers were quickly on the scene, and two occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody without further incident," Gurney said.
Charges against the pair were being considered.
