A fatal crash north of Whangārei last night has prompted a call for sightings of two cars travelling "at speed" in the lead-up to the incident.
Emergency services were called to the scene of the two-vehicle crash on State Highway 1 in Kauri just before 8.30pm.
"Sadly, one person has died at the scene. No other injuries have been reported," police said.
"The Serious Crash Unit has conducted a scene examination, and enquiries into the crash remain ongoing."
Investigators called for anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or had dashcam footage, to come forward.
A police spokesperson asked anyone who saw two vehicles travelling at speed in a northerly direction while travelling on SH1 between Springs Flat Roadhouse and Fonterra Kauri between 8pm and 8.30pm to contact 105.
