Six people have been arrested and a person taken to hospital after several intruders broke into a New Plymouth home overnight and attacked a sleeping occupant.
Detective Sergeant Chris Allemann said several people entered a home on Tumai St in the suburb of Spotswood at around 10.30pm and assaulted an occupant as they slept.
"That person sustained serious injuries, and was transported to hospital for treatment."
Two alleged offenders were located and arrested nearby with the assistance of a police dog unit, while a car believed to be connected fled the scene.
"A vehicle believed to be linked to those involved had left the area and was tracked to an address in Hamilton where a further four people were taken into custody," Allemann said.
Police believed this was an isolated incident and that there was no further risk to the public following this "distressing event", he added.
"As inquiries continue, police are appealing for information from anybody in Tumai Street and the surrounding areas who noticed any suspicious activity."
An 18-year-old man is due to appear in the New Plymouth District Court today, charged with aggravated burglary and possessing a knife in a public place.
A female will also appear in Youth Court, and charges against the four people located in Hamilton are being considered.
