A woman's quick thinking has helped police recover her brother's stolen car after it was taken from the driveway of their West Auckland home in broad daylight while he was inside gaming.
Police said it was called to a property on Miltonia Ave, Te Atatū South at around 2.30pm on August 1, after a woman saw her brother's vehicle leaving the driveway with an unknown occupant behind the wheel.
Waitematā West Area Prevention Manager, Acting Inspector Nick Salter said it appeared the alleged offender had entered the house while the man was busy gaming on a computer.
“The informant was arriving home, only to see her brother’s car exiting the driveway," he said.
“Thankfully she was able to provide a detailed description of the female behind the wheel."
Salter said the man only realised his car was missing after he received a phone call from his sister asking if his car was in the driveway.
He then discovered the vehicle was gone, along with the car keys that had been left on a drawer inside the house.
Police located the man's vehicle in Te Kanawa Cres, Henderson soon after, around 3km away from the Te Atatū property.
A woman matching the description of the occupant was located inside the vehicle. She was taken into custody.
“It’s great to see family looking out for one another, and taking action by reporting what is happening straight away," Salter said.
A 35-year-old woman was set to appear in Waitākere District Court today, charged with burglary and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.
