Dame Noeline Taurua's side have beaten Jamaica's Sunshine Girls for the first time in almost four years, winning 53-48 in Glasgow.
New Zealand were tested against Jamaica, a side boasting plenty of talent. But back in their black uniform, the Kiwis managed to maintain a narrow lead throughout.
Coach Dame Noeline Taurua said the win was massive for the team's confidence.
"We're progressing in the right direction," she said.
"It was tough out there, defensively we knew they were going to be strong. We also had a bit of quiver on the way but to come out with the win is awesome."
The Silver Ferns had a one goal lead going into the second half. The inclusion of Kimiora Poi at wing attack brought a point of difference and a calming presence.
They'll surely want to minimise their error rate before heading into the business end of the tournament. Pre-match, coach Dame Noeline expected around 10 turnovers - the Ferns coughed up 16.
A positive for the New Zealand side was the inclusion of Mila Reuelu-Buchanan in at wing defence. Normally a wing attack or centre, she played the entire match steering the defensive end.
"She's new to that position but her personality suits wing defence," said Taurua.
"She's a grafter, she's got the voice, she's like a halfback coming out of a scrum. She chats, she organises that front end. I thought she played well right through so she warranted to stay out there."
The Silver Ferns' next match is against Uganda on Wednesday.
