A Canadian politician has been caught reading an AI chatbot prompt aloud during a speech to his province's legislature, after apparently failing to notice it had been left in his notes.
Bill Oliver, a Progressive Conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick, was addressing a matter involving the Office of the New Brunswick Advocate last month.
"Public confidence in the office of an advocate matters," Oliver said, before the digression,.
"Here's a more natural, flowing version of that section that reads like a legislative speech rather than a series of short points," he added.
Footage of the moment was posted to the New Brunswick subreddit this week, quickly drawing attention from users unimpressed by the mix-up.
Commenters compared the error to professional standards expected of lawyers, and some called for Oliver to resign.
New Zealand's own Parliament is grappling with how AI should be used in official submissions, though not because of any similar mishap.
Clerk of the House David Wilson recently told 1News there was nothing wrong with people using AI to help refine their written submissions to Parliament, provided the views expressed remained genuinely their own.
He said the concern was less about the tool and more about whether it was producing someone's own thinking, rather than the AI's.
