One dead, power outage after crash closes SH1 north of Levin

Two people are dead following two seperate crashes in Northland last night.

One person has died and another is critically injured after a car crashed into a power pole north of Levin this afternoon, closing a section of State Highway 1 and leaving almost 100 properties without power.

Emergency services were called to the single-vehicle crash on State Highway 1 between Kawiu Rd and The Avenue just before 1pm on Monday.

"Sadly, one person died at the scene," a police spokesperson said.

St John said a helicopter, two ambulances and two rapid response vehicles responded.

"One patient has been airlifted to Wellington Hospital in a critical condition."

NZTA said the highway was closed between Koputaroa and Avenue North roads.

"Road users to detour via Koputaroa Rd. Note, the detour is not suitable for heavy vehicles."

Lines company Electra said 99 customers remained without electricity.

"Our crew are on site to evaluate the damage and try restore power as quickly and safely as it is safe for them to do so."
