Police probe burglaries, stolen cars and car fire in Canterbury

A burglary, two stolen cars and a vehicle set alight are being investigated as police look into whether a string of incidents across several suburbs are linked.

Police are investigating a series of incidents across Christchurch and Rolleston overnight, including two stolen cars, a car fire and burglaries at a commercial property and a bar, and are working to establish whether they're connected.

Police first received reports of someone trying to break into a van on Lady Isaac Dr in Rolleston at around 2.40am on Sunday.

Senior Sergeant Hamish Keer-Keer said two cars were seen leaving the area by arriving officers.

"Both were subsequently confirmed to be stolen cars."

Around 45 minutes later, one of the stolen cars was set on fire on Branston St in the Christchurch suburb of Hornby.

Police were then advised of a burglary at a commercial property on Halswell Junctions Road at about 3.20am.

"At this stage it has not been confirmed whether this incident was linked to the same offender/s," Keer-Keer said.

At about 4am, a bar on Withells Street in Avonhead was also burgled.

"One of the cars used by the offender/s on Lady Isaac Drive earlier in the night was seen leaving the area immediately after," he said.

No pursuits of any vehicles took place at any stage and inquiries are under way to identify and locate those involved.
