Land Information NZ has spotted a "wholesome surprise" captured in new aerial images over Queenstown.

The 10cm images, taken this year by the Queenstown Lakes District Council, were published on the Land Information NZ Data Service and Basemaps.

In a post to social media this afternoon, the government office said the photos captured "everything from the famous dramatic alpine landscape to the rapid growth at Frankton near the airport".

"This snapshot in time can help inform future planning and urban development decisions as the district continues to grow," Land Information said.

"While you're exploring, you might also spot a very wholesome surprise… a giant peace sign mowed into a field.

"A special reminder that geospatial data reflects not just our landscapes, but the people who shape them."
