Police have netted a trove of illicit drugs, ammunition and a high-powered Taser while tailing a fleeing wrong-way driver in Darfield yesterday afternoon.

Around 1.30pm, police spotted a known offender driving while suspended on West Coast Rd in Selwyn.

Officers signalled for the driver to pull over but he allegedly fled, "accelerating at speed on the highway and driving on the wrong side of the road, dramatically trying to avoid police", Acting Senior Sergeant Rob Irvine said.

Irvine said police did not actively pursue, due to the manner of driving, instead following the driver at a distance to his property.

There, officers observed skid marks on the gravel driveway and the vehicle parked at the back.

A search of the vehicle uncovered a "large amount of drugs", Irvine said. It was followed by a further search of the property by specialist police staff and a police dog.

During the search, police seized three cannabis plants, along with LSD, 500g of cocaine, steroids, a box of .22 and shotgun ammunition, and a high-powered Taser.

A 40-year-old man was arrested.

He was due to appear in the Christchurch District Court on Wednesday on 12 charges, including reckless driving, unlawfully possessing ammunition and a restricted weapon, and breaches of the Medicines Act.
