A person has been found dead inside a burning car on a rural Waitomo road, with police treating the death as unexplained.
Emergency services were alerted around 6am to a car on fire on Mokauiti Rd in Aria.
Fire and Emergency NZ responded to the blaze and, on arrival, located a person deceased inside the vehicle before notifying police.
Duty inspector Karl Thornton said police remained on scene and were working to establish what had occurred.
"At this stage the death is being treated as unexplained," Thornton said.

Cordons are in place on Mokauiti Rd, between Waitahi Rd and Oniao Rd, and the public is asked to avoid the area.
Fire and Emergency sent one unit from Pupu to the scene.
St John did not attend the incident.
