A burst water pipe has closed a gym and affected other businesses on a central Wellington street this morning.
Fire and Emergency NZ was first alerted to the burst pipe on Willeston St at 4.35am.
Three crews were on the scene and "waiting for the council to isolate the main and assisting with portable pumps", a spokesperson said.
"At this point, it is only affecting the one building but there are multiple businesses in the premises."
The Snap Fitness on Willeston St was closed "until further notice".
A post on the gym's social media said the burst main had "flooded the gym".
A Wellington Water spokesperson said the burst pipe at 22 Willeston St was not on the public network.
"This is a private leak, and the property owner arranged for a repair early this morning."
They said they received a request at 4.42am from a plumber on-site for a service connection valve to be shut off so repairs could be done.
Wellington Water crews shut off the valve at 5.45am, and water was isolated shortly after.
"We will continue to provide support on-site if required."
Wellington had been battling to address issues with its water infrastructure over the past several years.
In some cases, pipe bursts have affected water supplies and flooded streets.
According to the Wellington Water website, there was a backlog of 779 water leaks to be fixed in the entire metropolitan region, 341 of those in Wellington City.
