Company apologises for 'unacceptable' croc incident joke

A child was taken to hospital after falling into a crocodile enclosure and sustaining serous injuries.

A discount voucher company in the UK has apologised after subscribers received an email that made an insensitive joke in reference to a crocodile attack on a toddler.

Customers were outraged when they saw the contents of the online message included the phrase "Snap up these deals quicker than a croc can catch a kid!”

It came after a three-year-old child ended up in a Nile and saltwater crocodile enclosure at a UK zoo last week, sustaining serious injuries.

A man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He has since been released as police believe he is not fit to be interviewed. The pair are not known to each other.

The child was taken to hospital, where he is in a critical but stable condition.

In a follow-up statement a Wowcher spokesperson said they were "extremely sorry" for mentioning the event in a light-hearted manner.

“It should never have been written, it was never approved for use. The responsibility sits with us and we are urgently reviewing how our processes failed.

“We recognise the hurt and distress it has caused, particularly for the young child’s family at this unimaginably difficult time.”

The spokesperson went on to say that scheduled marketing content was under review to avoid another incident, stating “There is no excuse for this. We apologise unreservedly and will take the necessary steps to make sure this does not happen again”.
