A police officer in Queensland is being commended after rescuing a family's chihuahua from a house fire earlier this month.

Emergency services were called to a house on fire about two hours' west of the Sunshine Coast in Blackbutt North just before 7am on June 2.

The home's sole 91-year-old owner and occupant alerted the officer that his dog was trapped on the front porch.

The officer's body camera footage showed him quickly approaching the home as it was being engulfed in flames, while requesting fire crews over his radio.

Without hesitation, the officer climbed over a railing and onto the veranda where he called to the yapping dog.

Without hesitation, the officer climbed over a railing and onto the verandah where he called to the frightened dog.

The officer could be heard clicking, clapping and calling for the dog to follow him away from the danger area as loud bangs sound out from the blaze.

The small dog was eventually lifted by its jacket handle and passed over the verandah railing to its grateful owner.

Queensland police said in a statement there were no serious injuries reported and all emergency responders involved, along with the family chihuahua, were uninjured.

The fire was not thought to be suspicious.
