A puppy's prediction for New Zealand's upcoming World Cup game took an unfortunate turn this morning after the dog went to the toilet under the Breakfast desk on live TV.
Injured All Whites goalkeeper Oli Sail brought his 12-week-old groodle (golden retriever, poodle mix) puppy Bear into the studio to see if the dog could predict the outcome of New Zealand's opening World Cup match against Iran tomorrow.
"I'm embracing the new life as a puppy dad, really enjoying it,"Sail said.
Animal oracles have long been a tradition for World Cups, including Puka the kea at Wellington Zoo choosing losing teams at the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2023.
Speaking about the upcoming All Whites match, Sail said the "nerves will be starting to kick in" for the team in San Diego.
"It's real now isn't it? The games are tomorrow and they have to be ready."
Turning attention back to the groodle in Sail's arms, Breakfast host Chris Chang admitted he was "not easily suckered in by pets and animals unless they are genuinely cute".
"Famously hates animals," Tova O'Brien chimed in.
"Your puppy is, genuinely, possibly the cutest puppy I've ever seen," Chang conceded.

As the puppy was lowered to the ground to begin his prediction, Sail said "alright buddy, your moment to shine".
He wandered around the desk and licked the World Cup ball as he prepared to choose his match winner.
"This is going swimmingly, isn't it?" Chang joked.
The little dog then squatted down under the desk and did its business.
"This is terrific, and exactly why we should get live animals into the studio," Chang said.
Bear eventually went on to choose New Zealand as the predicted winners of the match, which Chang said may be a sign of "trouble in this game".
"I'm so glad we could share that for everyone to see," Sail laughed.
