Large fire breaks out at student flat in Dunedin overnight

Emergency services were alerted to the blaze on Harbour Tce at around 8pm last night.

Last night's fire which broke out at a student flat in Dunedin initially sparked fears there were people trapped inside, but crews later confirmed the house was empty.

Emergency services were alerted to the blaze on Harbour Tce at around 8pm last night.

Fire and Emergency NZ sent one truck from Willowbank and one from Dunedin City station.

The house was "well ablaze" on arrival.

On arrival, fire crews found a three-storey house "well ablaze" and requested two further trucks from St Kildas and Roslyn.

"Early calls reported people inside but this was found not to be the case," a FENZ spokesperson said.

The fire was extinguished by 10.30pm. There were no reports of injuries. Police said there was a scene guard in place today and a fire investigator would be in attendance.
