US gymnast Simone Biles reveals she 'almost died' in medical emergency

Simone Biles, of the United States, holds up her medals after the women's artistic gymnastics individual apparatus finals Bercy Arena at the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Simone Biles has revealed she suffered a medical emergency earlier this week that left her hospitalised and recovering in bed, describing it as "one of, if not the scariest experience of my life".

The US Olympic gymnastics great shared the news on Instagram on Saturday, posting a photograph of her wrist covered in hospital identification bracelets.

She did not disclose the nature of the emergency, when it occurred, or where she was treated.

"Almost dying wasn't on my bingo card earlier this week," Biles wrote, adding that the experience was made more frightening because her husband, NFL star Jonathan Owens, was away in Indianapolis for training with the Colts.

"I'm not one to normally share things like this because I value privacy in today's age," she wrote.

"I've been in bed resting this week, I'll explain sooner or later but s/o to my close circle who reached out, checked in, visited and or sent flowers. Loooovveeee y'all."

The post drew an immediate outpouring of concern from fans and fellow athletes.

Biles indicated she plans to share more details at a later date.

Widely regarded as the greatest gymnast of all time, Biles was the most decorated American gymnast ever, with 11 Olympic medals — including seven golds — and a record 30 World Championship medals, 23 of them gold.
