Increased risk of house fires over winter, FENZ says

The number of house fires have risen now that the weather is getting colder, which Fire and Emergency say is due to additional heating measures. (Source: 1News)

Additional heating measures over winter are causing more house fires, according to Fire and Emergency New Zealand.

Close contact between flammable objects and heating devices have caused many of the fires, and FENZ community risk reduction advisor Emma Hay said those cases are becoming more frequent.

“We actually see a 29% increase in house fires that start with flammable sources too close to heating," said Hay.

There were two fatal housefires this month in Auckland and Christchurch, making the concerns all the more real.

Hay said the impact these deadly blazes have on fire crews is damaging.

“It is really hard on our crews and that’s why any fire fatality is devastating and that’s why it’s really important that we do everything in our homes we can to prepare ourselves to reduce down that risk so our firefighters don’t have to experience those awful tragedies."

FENZ released a warning for families this winter, reminding them of the risks as well as what can be done to stay protected.

Fire and Emergency community risk reduction advisor Emma Hay discussed how to stay safe against fires.

The issue included checking smoke alarms, keeping dusty and ashy places clean, staying away from hot surfaces and having an exit plan.

“We are wearing items of clothing and dependant on the material some are more flammable than others like sleepwear and pyjamas.

“It is important with our escape plan that we have two ways out and that those ways are not obstructive and they are clear pathways and then a safe meeting place,” said Hay.

The warnings and advice are available online on the Fire and Emergency website, which FENZ hope will help save lives and make it easier for crews this winter.
