Alleged fuel thieves tried hiding in swamp while fleeing police

Two men submerged themselves in a swamp to hide from authorities after an alleged attempt to siphon fuel from a Tauranga construction site, police say.

The two were spotted by a camera operator at a construction site on Takitimu Drive at 11.35pm, "acting suspiciously around vehicles".

When police arrived, the pair allegedly bolted on foot, fleeing to a nearby swamp area in an attempt to hide by submerging themselves.

At the scene, officers found that vehicles had been broken into. They also found equipment used to siphon fuel.

The two alleged offenders were tracked by a police dog unit and found "some time later". They were taken into custody and treated for dog bite injuries.

A 55-year-old man was charged with burglary. He was due to appear in the Tauranga District Court on May 25.

The other man, a 52-year-old, was charged with two counts of burglary and was due to appear in Tauranga District Court today.

He was also alleged to have stolen $12,000 worth of copper from a premises in Mount Maunganui last month.
