Waikanae house fire sends smoke across neighbourhood

A house fire has sent smoke billowing across Waikanae this afternoon, with fire crews continuing to battle the blaze.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) said it received multiple calls about the fire on the corner of Kea St and Mohua St at around 3pm, with initial concerns people may have been inside.

However, all occupants were accounted for when crews reached the scene.

Four fire crews, a support vehicle and two specialist teams — including a breathing apparatus unit and a command team — were currently responding.

Footage captured by 1News shows thick grey smoke pouring from the property and drifting across the surrounding neighbourhood.
