Christchurch residents will see the police Eagle helicopter flying overhead for the next few days as it assists local police in tackling youth crime.
Superintendent Tony Hill said Christchurch police would use the helicopter "as part of our continued focus on tackling the impact youth can have on retail crime and vehicle theft".
"People in Christchurch can expect to see it flying over the next few days."
Hill said it was a national resource that would be brought to Christchurch from "time to time" to support local staff.
"We thank residents for their patience, as we work towards making our city safer."
Eagle is the police's air support unit – often used as an "airborne observation platform" to help coordinate ground units and track persons of interest on foot or in vehicles.
The Eagle unit comprised three helicopters, usually based in Auckland, with each flight crewed by a civilian pilot and two uniformed tactical flight officers.
