Three people have been injured, one critically, in a single-vehicle crash that has closed a key South Island route in Canterbury this afternoon.
The crash near the intersection of North Rakaia Rd and State Highway 1 in Bankside was reported to emergency services at 1.12pm on Friday.
Hato Hone St John said it had responded with a first response unit, an operations manager, two air ambulance helicopters and two ambulances.
"Our ambulance staff treated three patients and transported two of them to Christchurch Hospital by helicopter, one in a critical condition and one in a serious condition," a St John spokesperson said. "The third patient was transported by road ambulance to Christchurch Hospital in a moderate condition."
"Motorists are advised to avoid the area and choose alternative routes as emergency services work at the scene," a police spokesperson said, adding the road would be blocked for a "significant period of time".

NZTA said the road was closed north of the Rakaia Bridge — New Zealand's longest road bridge that carries SH1 over the Rakaia River.
"SH1 Rakaia Bridge remains CLOSED due to a serious crash north of the bridge. It is likely to remain closed for several hours while emergency services work at the scene. Please allow extra time for your journey or delay travel if possible."
A detour is in place for northbound traffic via East St, Elizabeth Ave, and Main South Rd. Southbound traffic is being diverted through North Rakaia Rd, Elizabeth Ave, and East St.
Traffic has backed up heavily, with queues stretching at least 1km either side of the road closure.
Rakaia School said the Overdale Bus would not be operating and some students would not be able to travel home due to the road closure.
"We will do our best to support any children who need to remain at school during this time. Food and supervision will be provided. Please note that once the bridge is open, you will need to pick your children up from Rakaia School as the bus will not be running."
