One of the world's largest cargo planes has landed at Auckland Airport this afternoon.

The Antonov An-124 Ruslan arrived in the country from Hawaii.

"Auckland Airport can confirm the aircraft is part of a planned private, specialist freight movement," a spokesperson for the airport told 1News in a statement.

According to flight-tracking websites, the flight to Auckland took nine hours and 21 minutes. It took a similar amount of time to fly from New Orleans to Hawaii.

The four-engine aircraft was designed in the 1980s by the Antonov design bureau in the Ukrainian SSR of the Soviet Union.

The plane – measuring 69.10m x 21.08m with a wingspan of 73.3m – was capable of carrying 150 tonnes of cargo and had a maximum take-off weight of more than 400 tonnes, according to the Antonov Airlines website.

Just 55 Antonov An-124 Ruslan aircraft were built between 1982 and 2014.
