A toddler on the Gold Coast is in an induced coma after inhaling cake-decorating dust which turned into a toxic paste.

Professional baker Katie Robinson was baking a cake over the weekend when her son Dustin 'Dusty' Wildman found gold dust powder.

The 14-month-old inhaled the powder, which turned into a paste that immediately blocked his lungs, a GoFundMe page set up for the family read.

Dusty became unresponsive and his mum called emergency services.

Robinson told The Courier Mail she later learned the dust contained copper, which wouldn't dissolve in blood.

"[The powder] gathered in his lungs," she told The Courier Mail.

"Now we have to wait to make sure his kidneys and liver are OK."

The toddler had since undergone surgery to clear his lungs at Queensland Children's Hospital, where he remained in an induced coma.

He was due for another round of surgery shortly.

The GoFundMe page had raised more than AU$29,000 (NZ$35,400) by 2pm today.
