a2 Milk has announced a voluntary recall of three batches of its Platinum USA label infant milk formula, sold exclusively in the United States, after the presence of bacterial toxin cereulide was detected.
In a statement to the NZX, the company said the product was manufactured by Synlait Milk Limited and distributed through a2 Milk’s website, Amazon and Meijer stores.
The product had already been discontinued and removed from sale before the recall began due to the expiration of importation rights.
The product was made in compliance with all relevant standards at the time.
The recall followed additional testing of the product after an industry update from New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries on April 15, 2026, which outlined expectations for managing cereulide, applied retrospectively for New Zealand infant formula manufacturers.
a2 Milk said the likely source of cereulide was an ingredient used in the product.
No confirmed cases of infant illness or harm had been reported to the company. Where cereulide does affect consumers, symptoms typically appear within 30 minutes to six hours and usually involve nausea and vomiting, which most often resolve within 24 hours.
a2 Milk said it is working with the United States Food and Drug Administration and has provided guidance to US consumers who may have purchased the affected product.
The recall is isolated to the USA label product, which has a different formulation and relevant ingredient to the English label a2 Platinum infant formula sold in Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Vietnam and through cross-border channels into China.
"The recall is in relation to a relatively small quantity of three batches of the product comprising 63,078 tins in total with an estimated 16,428 tins sold to consumers, with total USA IMF sales accounting for about 0.1% of the company’s total sales revenue in the first half of 2026," the company said.
