One dead after boat capsizes off Kaikōura's South Bay

One person has died after a boat capsized off Kaikōura's South Bay this afternoon.

Police were alerted to a boat capsizing at Sharks Tooth off the Kaikōura Peninsula, just before 1pm today.

"Sadly, one person was located deceased," a police spokesperson said.

Police did not say if there were any other people involved in the capsize.

Coastguard said police notified the Coastguard National Operations Centre at around 12.40pm.

Volunteers from Coastguard Kaikōura responding on Kaikōura Rescue alongside police officers and members of the public.

Inquiries into the circumstances of the incident were ongoing.
