F1: Liam Lawson collides with wall to end Singapore GP practice early

Liam Lawson of New Zealand and Visa Cash App Racing Bulls exits the car after a crash during practice ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Singapore at Marina Bay Street Circuit

Liam Lawson’s preparations for the Singapore Grand Prix have hit a setback after the Kiwi driver crashed out of his second practice session at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

Fresh off the back of his career-best Formula 1 result in Azerbaijan last week, the 23-year-old looked confident early on, but his run was cut short just 10 laps in after he ran wide at turn 16 and collided with the wall.

"I got a little bit too much curb at [turn] 16," Lawson told media afterwards. "It bounced me across to the left, I took too much curb at 17.

"It’s frustrating to end the session in the wall.

"We’ll make some more changes overnight and fine-tune it. I’ll learn from what happened today and try to put it together for tomorrow."

Lawson had been showing promising pace up until the crash, holding second place on the leaderboard at one point, but the incident forced him back to the garage and ended his session prematurely.

It was a stronger showing for his teammate Isack Hadjar, who finished the session second-fastest behind McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and ahead of Red Bull star Max Verstappen.

Racing Bulls will now face a race against time to repair the car ahead of FP3 and tomorrow's qualifying session (2am NZT).

Lawson will look to bounce back from the crash and finish in the points this weekend, during a critical time where his future in the sport remains uncertain.

The Singapore Grand Prix will take place Monday morning (1am NZT).
