Some North Island residents were woken early this morning after a 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck just west of Rotorua.

GeoNet recorded the 'weak' earthquake to be 168km deep and 10km west of Rotorua at 2.19am.

More than 2200 people reported feeling the quake on GeoNet, with some sharing on social media that an Android alert sent out woke them rather than the shaking itself.

"I got the alert and slept through the early quake," one user commented.

Another said: "Didn't feel anything or hear anything, woke up to find an alert on phone. Haven't had an alert for a long time [in] Lower Hutt."
