For the past five years, Olympic rower Rob Hamill and his family have been at sea in an attempt to circumnavigate the globe.

The origin of the voyage was to retrace the route his brother Kerry took in the 70s, before he was captured, tortured and killed by Cambodia's Khmer Rouge.

This morning — from the coast of Vangaaru in the Maldives — they caught up with Breakfast.

Hamill said their life sailing was very different to what they were used to and it took a lot of adjusting.

He added that part of the reason behind wanting to embark on the adventure was that he saw no hurry with his kids’ education.

“We just wanted to slow that process down a bit and learn through experiences rather than the four walls of a classroom and I think it’s been a great journey so far."

His son Declan said it was “scary” at first but he now enjoyed it. His brother Ivan said he too, had similar reservations in the beginning.
