Northland’s coastal township of Mangawhai is experiencing an onslaught of traffic as a thoroughfare while State Highway 1 at the Brynderwyn Hills is shut.

The closure of the main arterial is having a significant impact on Northland’s economy, but local businesses are making the most of the extra traffic.

Light vehicles are being sent along the Cove Road detour through Langs Beach and Mangawhai – which passes The BBQ Hut.

One resident said it’s good for business, but not so great when you’re trying to get somewhere.

“It’s just like being back in Auckland,” they said.

Olivia Traveler said her parents are visiting from the United Kingdom, and while the new route lets them see a new area, it is “annoying” getting put off the highway and onto “tricky small roads”.

Business owner Jeannie Davis told 1News: “Everyone is feeling the stress but you know, well, make hay when the sun shines I reckon”.

While Mangawhai businesses are making the most of a frustrating situation, many businesses north of there are struggling.

The Bay of Island tourism and hospitality industry has reported a 25% drop in bookings.

State Highway 1 was battered by big weather events and closed several times last year. It is estimated to cost Northland’s economy close to $2 million each day it was closed.

It is hoped the current round of repairs will prevent it from happening again.
