This week's Good Sorts is a group of kind-hearted locals who came to the rescue of a couple in a small rural town that could do with some luck.

It was a tough day for Rodger Wright and his wife Christine.

They were on their way to Palmerston North from Hastings. Rodger was about to receive his first treatment for prostate cancer.

Both Rodger and Christine were worried about the trip. Christine’s worry was only amplified when she heard the car was making a strange sound.

“Just turn the radio up,” Rodger replied.

But it was soon after Rodger realised Christine was onto something with the car concern.

They broke down. It was as if the day couldn’t get any worse.

The pair were stranded in Norsewood – a small rural settlement in the Tararua District that's home to just under 2000 people, and about an hour away from their Palmerston North destination.

But it was soon after that a Norsewood hero came to the rescue.

William is a local contractor in the area. He showed Rodger and Christine Norsewood isn’t just home to Vikings, but also some Good Sorts.

William and his colleague Josh sorted a tow out for the couple and learned about their plight on the trip to a local garage.

From there William and Josh came up with a plan. Josh got his boss Kevin involved and wrangled a Toyota Prado that Rodger and Christine could use to complete their vital trip to Palmerston North.

The couple were stunned at the generosity.

"It restored our faith in human kindness," they said.
