Murder charge laid over Nelson man's death

Police have arrested a 33-year-old man over an alleged homicide in Nelson earlier this month.

James Whitikau Barton died in Stoke on November 10. Barton was found with critical injuries at a property on Orchard St in Stoke, and he was rushed to hospital, but he died not long after.

A 33-year-old man has been now charged with murder, police said today. He is due to appear in court on Friday.

Police thanked the public for their help with the case.

"The information we received was valuable in piecing together what happened on the night Mr Whitikau died and enabled us to come to this result," said Detective Inspector Lex Bruning.

"As this matter is now before the court, Police are limited in making further comment."
