Police are investigating after two fires were started within just a few hours of each other at an Auckland church last night.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand and police were called to an Onewa Rd, Birkenhead property, on Auckland's North Shore, at around 8.15pm on Monday.

The NZ Herald reported the property was Zion Hill Birkenhead Methodist Church.

Six fire trucks attended as a small fire lit on the side of the property was extinguished.

Just a few hours later, emergency services were again called to the church after another fire was lit against the wall of a shed.

Four fire trucks attended that call out.

A FENZ spokesperson said both fires were being treated as suspicious, while police said inquiries were in the early stages to determine the full circumstances.
