One dead after two-vehicle crash near Ashburton

One person has died at the scene following a "serious" two-vehicle crash near Ashburton this morning.

Police said the crash, which occurred around 10.20am on Rakaia Highway, involved a car and truck.

Hone Hato St John responded with one ambulance.

Both lanes of the road are blocked, with motorists advised to avoid the area and take an alternative route.

The Serious Crash Unit is attending the scene and an investigation into the cause of the fatal crash is underway.
