Kiwis are being encouraged to get their kits off for Nude Gardening Day tomorrow.

Speaking to Breakfast this morning, Alice de Wet from NZ Naturist Federation says this year's theme is about growing your own produce.

"It's very much in touch with naturist views because the idea is basically to get out in your garden, get out into nature and get in touch with your inner self and being in nature is all about that freedom of not having the burden of not having to cover yourself up."

De Wet said the process is "very liberating" and can be "very good" for self esteem.

"If you have nothing to hide it's actually really liberating for yourself and your own personal growth."

She said people should give it a go tomorrow, even if they've never tried it before. She said you can try it in your own garden, or look up a naturist club nearby.

De Wet said safety always comes first when gardening, and people should still wear sunscreen and a hat when gardening naked in the warm weather.

"If you want to wear gloves when you're gardening that's also a good idea, some people prefer to wear footwear, you definitely have to be safe at the same time."
