Jacinda Ardern has announced a change in alert levels for Northland as evidence to date shows Covid-19 has not spread further in the region.

However Waikato will remain at Alert Level 3.

Ardern said at a media conference today the Northland region will move to Alert Level 2 at 11.59pm on Tuesday night.

There have been no new cases of Covid-19 in Northland since the region moved to Level 3 on October 6.

Northland shifted up to Level 3 after a lack of cooperation from a woman who returned a positive result in Whangārei on October 6.

The Ministry of Health is urging anyone with symptoms of the virus to get tested.

The second person later tested positive for the virus, having been unable to be tracked down by police for several days.

On Saturday, a third Auckland woman linked to two women who travelled to Northland tested positive for Covid-19.

There have been no other cases, however.

However in Waikato, Ardern says the situation is different. She says “we need to act with caution at the moment”. The region will stay in Level 3, with a review on Friday.

A small area of Waikato went to Level 3 on September 25 after a remand prisoner and three of his household contacts tested positive for Covid-19.

It was extended on October 3 with large parts of the region locked down.

Security at the Claudelands Event Centre turns cars away after sky-high demands saw the testing station hit capacity.

A number of further positive Covid cases have since emerged in the region, which currently has 45 cases, three of which have now recovered.

Auckland will remain in Alert Level 3 as it stands, and will not move to step two in its phased road map.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed Auckland would stay at its current Alert Level 3 settings for another two weeks. It will be reviewed again on Monday, November 1.

It comes as 60 new community cases were recorded on Monday, 24 of which have yet to be linked to existing cases.

Three of the new cases have been detected in Waikato and the remainder tested positive in Auckland.
