A motorcyclist has died in Canterbury after crashing into a tree which then caught alight.

Police say the crash happened on Williams Street, Kaiapoi, about 3:10pm.

The Serious Crash Unit is attending the scene and traffic management is in place.

No other vehicles were involved.
