Steve Hansen can flick the switch between All Blacks coach and normal Kiwi bloke fairly easily but one reporter found out the hard way there's no point asking how much time he spends as either.

Hansen was fielding questions after naming the All Blacks squad to face Namibia this weekend in the Rugby World Cup when one journalist got the coach scratching his head.

"How much time do I be me?" Hansen repeated back as he tried to clarify the reporter's question.

A second attempt didn't get much further but finally Hansen figured he wanted to know, "How much in a day do I turn off?"

"Quite a bit," Hansen said.

"It's an art, I think - when I'm working, I'm working. But then I'll turn off and just enjoy being a normal person because that's who I am."

When the reporter asked for specific times, Hansen's reply got media laughing.

"I don't time it because that means I wouldn't be turning off!"

The coach then pretended to check his watch and realise it was "time to go back to being a selector".
