A former newspaper journalist has been refused bail after allegedly threatening to attack a church in the Australian capital, Canberra.

Australia's Nine News reports James Michael Waugh, 28, allegedly posted a violent threat on the Facebook page of the Canberra House of Prayer in late March.

"I'm going to kill every single one of you...,"the post read.

"Get your gang together and come here and see what happens," he said, allegedly giving his own address.

Waugh was arrested in the Canberra suburb of Griffith on Tuesday after a call was made to the national security hotline.

He has been charged with using a carriage service to menace, possession of an object with intention to kill another person and threatening to act with intent to cause public harm.

Nine News reports Waugh was taken for a mental health assessment but a doctor concluded he had no mental health concerns.

He was refused bail and will return to court on April 26.

It's reported Waugh previously worked for the Queanbeyan Age regional newspaper but left it in the last six months for another job and has been unemployed for at least a month.
