The man accused of carrying out last month's attacks on two Christchurch mosques is facing 50 murder charges and 39 charges of attempted murder, police say.

Police said today Australian Brenton Harrison Tarrant, 28, will face the charges when he appears in court tomorrow via audio-video link from Auckland's Paremoremo Prison, the country's only specialist maximum-security unit.

The High Court judge’s move comes amid ongoing questions around whether the alleged gunman should be named at all. (Source: Other)

He previously faced a single murder charge.

Police have not ruled out laying further charges.

Earlier this week a High Court judge ruled media would not be allowed to film or take photos of the accused when he appears.

Fifty Muslim worshipers died in the attacks at the Al Noor and Linwood mosques on March 15, and scores were injured in New Zealand's worst modern act of violence.
