Hawke's Bay beach still set to re-open, despite continued landslides at Cape Kidnappers

The move means Hastings District Council could now face legal action if anyone else is hurt in a slip.

Slips have continued at Cape Kidnappers' Clifton Beach  in Hawke's Bay - with the council advising people to avoid the area despite the intention to re-open the beach by the end of the month with increased safety measures such as signs.

After two Korean tourists were injured in the first landslide  in January, Hastings District Council closing the popular walking track and halted Gannet Beach Adventures tractor tours in peak season. The slip was followed by a similar-sized one in early February.

Last weekend, another large landslide occurred at the site of the initial slip, and on March 23 an "unrelated" landslide saw about 3000 cubic metres of material fall from the cliff about 500 metres away from the original slip, Hastings District Council said in a statement today.

Surveys are being conducted in the area to help determine whether the new activity means there is a heightened risk of more landslides, the council's statement said.

Last month, Hastings District Councillors  voted against a recommendation  to keep the Cape Kidnappers beach walk closed after major landslides.

Clifton Beach access remains closed until April 29, when the council aims to open it with interim health and safety measures, including increased signage and information for users as well as an interim operations manual.
